About the Artist

Jean Lea Johnson is an artist who gleens much strength and serenity from her work as a painter of portraits and historical portraiture. She works strictly in oils on canvas spending anywhere from one day and up to 3 months on a piece depending on the subject matter and size.

As an artist who has painted off and on for the past 25 years Jean Lea had exhibited in Scotland, England, Canada and the United States.

Her work is included in private collections in Barrain, Britain, Australia and the United States.

Jean Lea has also presented work within the aspect of healing through art for various organizations including The Canadian Art Therapist's Association.

Begining her formal study of drawing under the direction of Ed Telenco Fine Art Studio in the Niagara Region, moving on to McMaster University Fine Art Program and The Glasgow School of Arts in Glasgow Scotland.

Jean Lea was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario. The house she grew up in was nestled into the escarpment, the backyard leading into a forest. This is where Jean spent much time with nature.


Artist Statement

I exist with the sensitivity and vulnerability of a woman who has given birth in many ways. The evolution of myself as a woman has proven to be an innate ability of giving into profound intimacy or profound wrath in the process of creating.

 

Exhibitions

Jean has spoken and presented her paintings at two separate conference in the U.K., pertaining to the “Art and Healing”. Also the 24th Annual Conference titled "The Personal is Political” and “Art Therapy & Social Conscious”.
Jean’s poetry and prose has been published within several literary journals of one woman’s collection of prose. In 2004, Jean juried artist’s work for Art Calendar Project by Cottage Studio Program in Hamilton Ontario. Jean also sat on the Advisory Board of Directions for “Start Me Up Niagara” a program to promote emerging artists.
